Thermodynamically driven incompressible uid mixtures

چکیده
We compare two models describing the dynamics of phase separation of incompressible mixtures: A local model proposed by de Gennes, and a nonlocal model proposed by E and Pally-Muhoray. We nd that in the interfacial regime, the local model gives rise to interfacial motion via the Mullins-Sekerka law for moderate quenches, and surface diiusion for deep quenches. The interface dynamics is slowed down sharply as the quench depth is increased. The nonlocal model, on the other hand, has an additional convective mechanism which gives rise to motion by Hele-Shaw dynamics. This additional mechanism is insensitive to the quench depth. While both models explain qualitatively the observed pinning phenomenon for deeply quenched oo-critical mixtures, only the nonlocal model predicts the correct dependence of the coarsening rate on the quench depth.

Thermodynamically driven incompressible fluid mixtures
We compare two models describing the dynamics of phase separation of incompressible mixtures: A local model proposed by de Gennes, and a nonlocal model proposed by E and Palffy-Muhoray. We find that in the interfacial regime, the local model gives rise to interfacial motion via the Mullins-Sekerka law for moderate quenches, and surface diffusion for deep quenches. The interface dynamics is slow...
متن کاملCoarsening of solid-liquid mixtures in a random acceleration eld
The eeects of ow induced by a random acceleration eld (g-jitter) are considered in two related situations that are of interest for microgravity uid experiments: the random motion of isolated buoyant particles, and diiusion driven coarsening of a solid-liquid mixture. We start by analyzing in detail actual accelerometer data gathered during a recent microgravity mission, and obtain the values of...
متن کاملTwo-Phase Flow Analysis of Unstable Fluid Mixing in 1D Geometry
A two-phase ow model for an acceleration-driven compressible uid mixing layer is applied to an initially planar/cylindrical/spherical uid connguration. A conservative form of the one-dimensional compressible equations is derived under the assumption that the uid concentration is continuous. With a hyperbolic conservation law for the concentration gradient, the model supports traveling discontin...
متن کاملOn variational features of vortex ows
Ideal incompressible ‡uid is a Hamiltonian system which possesses an in…nite number of inte-grals, the circulations of velocity over closed ‡uid contours. This allows one to split all the degrees of freedom into the driving ones and the "slave" ones, the latter to be determined by the integrals of motions. The "slave" degrees of freedom correspond to "potential part" of motion, which is driven ...
متن کاملPressure Estimates in Two Dimensional Incompressible Uid Ow
We derive sharp pressure estimates for two dimensional incompressible uid ow, in terms of natural quantities such as enstrophy, energy and angular momentum. We cover both the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, and both periodic planar ows and spherical ows. In a two dimensional incompressible uid with bounded enstrophy, can we control the oscillation of pressure? A rst inspection of the equatio...
